Hockey Gear Basics

Are you or a family member about to take up hockey?

Hockey is a competitive game that can be played on the ice or a field. Both ice hockey and field hockey require maneuvering a ball or puck across the course so that it can be shot into the opponent's goal. Ice hockey and field hockey are intensive sports that challenge key muscle groups and can burn several hundred calories per hour.

There are several types of hockey.

The type of hockey played will determine what equipment basics you will need. Here are just a few examples of the various types of hockey that can be played.

Field Hockey
Indoor Hockey - Field Hockey Indoors
Mini Hockey - Field Hockey with a minimum of 5 players on each team including goalkeeper.
Ice hockey
Inline hockey (Single Bladed Wheels)
Roller Hockey (Quad Wheels)
Street hockey - (played the same as ice hockey with the same gear (excluding inline skates) but usually on a street or other paved area [not recommended to play in traffic])
Unicycle Hockey UniHoc - Played with plastic sticks (both sides flat) and plastic hollow ball as an introduction to hockey also known as Floor Ball or Floor Hockey

Since hockey is a contact support, a major portion of the gear needed centers around protection. If you spend time finding the right equipment you will assure that the first hockey experience is safer and a lot more fun.

Here is a small shopping list to get you ready:
