Biking Gear Basics

Biking/Cycling can be done on roadways or on rough trails, and alongside beaches and in parks. You can get a bike with variable speeds or use your strength alone. Getting the right cycling equipment and gear takes some consideration. First decide where you are going to ride, then get the gear to go with your choice.

Bikes – Chose One or More!

Mountain Bike – Used for riding on almost anything from dirt roads, mountains or even smooth street surfaces.

Road Bike - Used when there is a need for speed and is great on riding in streets and sidewalks. These bikes have lightweight frames and narrow seats, and use levers to change gears easily.

Hybrid Bikes – Out for a little fitness? The hybrid is a combo mountain and road bike and is used for rough bike paths found in parks and light off-road cycling.

Track Racing Bike – The fastest of bike on the market today for the speed demon in you! Most of these have fixed gears so you use your strength to get going fast.

Beach Bikes and Beach Cruisers – Big tires mean smooth ride, use these to even ride “on” the beach!
