Ice Skating Gear Basics
If you have decided to take up ice skating and you have had knee, hip, lower back or ankle problems,
you should consult your doctor prior to participating in ice skating. If you have no
medical problems, then there are very few items you need to consider before starting this sport.
Before you start you will need:
1. Skates: there are different blade designs for different types of skating
2. Protective gear include knee and elbow pads to protect from falls
3. Helmet (for speed skating)
Recreational ice skating is an excellent way to have fun and get fit with friends and family.
If it is your first time then it would be wise to wear some protective gear. Remember, there are several
types of skates so when making a purchase, make sure you understand the difference. Many of the higher
end skates are designed specifically for people with advanced or intermediate experience.
Depending on where you intend to skate, many facilities provide skate rentals thus eliminating the need to purchase skates.
Even if you are just going to recreational skate, skating injuries are
common and most injuries are caused by falling so it is important that children wear helmets.

Knee pads and elbow pads will provide
additional protection from any falls backwards or forwards causing harm to either elbow or the knee cap.
If you are just starting out and plan to go to your local skating center, it may be wise to try and go when it is less crowded. Crowds may
contribute to a tensing of your muscles and can possibly cause more frequent falling.
