Camping and Hiking Gear Basics

Planning on going camping and hiking? Haven't got a clue where to begin?

You don’t want to go trail hiking without the proper gear. Here is a list of items you need to get started.

Basic Gear for Every Trail

Backpack - You need a backpack to carry your essentials! They come in soft or framed packs.

Hiking Shoes and Socks – You need trail boots for hiking and the right socks. DON’T USE REGULAR SNEAKERS – They don’t support your ankles! Some rocks may puncture a sneaker too.

River Sandals – Keep hiking shoes dry. Wear river sandals to cross creeks, streams and rivers.

Tent - Getting a tent for making it a fun multi-day event! There are LOTS of tent types to shop for. First thing to narrow your search with is how many are sharing the one tent?

Sleeping Bags - You certainly want to stay warm and comfortable while sleeping outdoors. Sleeping bags also come in a wide variety of styles and colors!

Lanterns or Flashlights - Remember newbie's, no electric means dark nights. Safety first! Make sure you have light when you need it.

Cooking Stoves or cookware - If you are making it a multi-day event, cooking outdoors with friends and family is great fun so make sure you have all your supplies.

Coolers or thermos - No matter how long you hike or camp, you must always bring drinks to keep you hydrated. You need a carrying size for any type of hiking, as well as larger coolers for long stays.
